"One riot, one Ranger."

The Texas Rangers were divided into companies, each responsible for a particular territory.
Company A was originally headquartered at Alice.

Beginning with the revolution to separate Texas from Mexico in 1835, the Rangers led the fight against the Indians and Hispanics who stood in the way of the new residents of the Texas Republic.
Following the Civil War, the Rangers were replaced by state police for a time, but were reconstituted in 1874. Famed Rangers like Captains L.H. McNelly, J.H. Hall, and J.B. Armstrong kept the peace, capturing or killing criminals like John Wesley Hardin and Sam Bass.
After the turn of the century, the Rangers fought crime and banditry along the border and in the oil towns; prohibition gave plenty of work in both.
During the 30's, Ranger Frank Hamer tracked Bonnie and Clyde from Texas into Louisiana and helped shoot them down.
Now in their third century, the Rangers continue as a potent law enforcement agency in Texas.

State Rangers, Texas

Acquired personally in a tiny antique store in New Mexico, but of unknown provenance, this is an interesting variant of the Texas Ranger badge. It is reminiscent of an authentic badge worn by Ranger Marvin "Red" Burton, as described on the official Texas Ranger website.

The front bears the letters T E X A S on the five-pointed star at its center.
