Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier, 1997, Atlantic Monthly Press

Review by Ambrose Bierce

An elegaic {damn, I've always wanted to use that term}, slow, almost ponderous look at a uniquely 19th century love affair between a young Confederate soldier and a Charleston debutante he hardly knows. He, wounded and sick of the war, makes his way across a ravaged South towards home. She, saddened at the loss of her father, has taken on a new life, working her tiny farm on the slopes of Cold Mountain.

A lovingly rendered depiction of backcountry Southern life amid the turmoil of the War.

This is not Gettysburg, but for those seeking inner truths rather than the blare of trumpets and the roar of cannons, a gem.
